Bur oak is an extremeley long lived large, deciduous tree with a very wide, open crown. Usually wider than tall, the tree can exceed 100 ft. in height and width. The massive trunk supports heavy, horizontal limbs and rough, deep-ridged bark. Leaves up to 9 inches long with very large acorns in fall. A beautiful native shade tree.
Lacey oak branches are erect and spreading and there can be multiple trunks. Leaves are deciduous, thick and oblong with a few shallow lobes. Foliage is peach-colored in spring and fall; dark-blue or grayish-green in summer. Summer foliage takes on a smokey appearance.
