Plant of the Week – Eastern Red Cedar
Ask Burton: This week, a mention of a common issue we’ve been hearing a lot of, lately. Q: I have new Eastern red cedars which are turning an odd color right now – the leaves are still pliable, but it’s getting darker colored, almost grey or reddish-brown in some places. Not all of my red cedars are doing this – I have a number of them on my property but it’s sporadically happening along my row. Is there something I can do to fix this?
Chase’s Plant Pick of the Week – Eastern Red Cedar
Ask Burton Q: My Indian hawthorn are showing some sort of chewing damage. How do we stop this?
Ask Burton: Q: My red cedars aren’t looking so good, and they were fine two weeks ago! They’re established, but now they’re thinning suddenly and showing some browned areas. Any idea what’s going on?
Ask Burton: Q: Three of the 9 eastern red cedars we planted about a month ago have something on the tips of the branches. All 3 of them are in the same area. The rest of the tree is green and looks fine. This does not appear to be a disease to me, as all of these tan colored tips are pretty much uniform on the outer branches of the tree. The other 6 cedars do not have this (branches are 100% green – including tips of branches). What is happening to these 3 plants?
Ask Burton: Q: We live out in the country and would like to screen off our home from the road in front of the house. We don’t have a sprinkler system out there, but really want a screen of trees to break the noise and the sight line from the road. Any suggestions?
