July in the Garden: What to Plant, Prune, Feed, and Watch For!
ASK BURTON: Q: My crape myrtle is dripping sap, isn’t blooming right, and generally just looks tired. There are also tiny white dots up and down the branches. How do I fix this?
Ask Burton: Q: I had excellent tomatoes this spring, and I want to have the best fall garden possible. Should I keep my existing tomato plants (they still look good), or replant young starts?
Ask Burton: This week, the fungus is among us! Q: My flowerbeds and a row of my shrubs need some help. My coreopsis look terrible, with some of the leaves turning grey, and I have mildew and some sort of spotting on the lower leaves of my crapemyrtles. I also have a row of redtip photinias along my back fence, and they’re covered in angry red spots. My periwinkles are dying day by day – it started with a couple of individual plants, and every day, more turn brown and die.
This week, it’s all about relaxing, it’ll all be OK! Q: I have a mess of issues in my yard. My Crape Myrtles are filled with webs, my redbud has speckles all over the leaves, and the blooms on my mums are starting to turn brown. Help!
Ask Burton: Q: I have a ‘Dynamite’ crape myrtle in my back yard and I love the bright red blooms on it. I’d like to have one near my front door too. How easy would it be to keep ‘Dynamite’ trimmed down to three to four feet tall?
