Spineless Prickly Pear
Opuntia ellisiana
A tough, low-spreading cactus free of the spines and glochids of wild prickly pear, making it safe to plant near walkways, patios, and play areas. Bright yellow summer flowers draw hummingbirds and pollinators, followed by edible red fruit. A true Texas Native heat-lover, it thrives in our summers and well-drained clay soils with virtually no supplemental water once established, and its deer resistance makes it a dependable pick for North Texas xeriscapes, rock gardens, or roadside plantings.
