Tulips are one of the most striking flowers of late winter and early spring, and to enjoy their beauty, a little preparation goes a long way. Here’s what you need to know:
To get the best display, buy your tulip bulbs early. Tulips need a chilling period to bloom, naturally growing in cooler climates. Since North Texas doesn’t offer the extended cold that tulips require, you’ll need to mimic this by chilling your bulbs in the refrigerator for at least six weeks before planting. Be sure to keep them in a paper or mesh bag in your crisper drawer, and avoid storing them near fruits, which release ethylene gas that can harm the bulbs.
When it’s time to plant—around December—fertilize with bone and blood meal for the best results. Then, come spring, you’ll be rewarded with a burst of vibrant color in your garden!
