Plant of The Week – Ann and Jane Magnolias

Ann and Jane are part of the beloved “Little Girl” family of hybrid magnolias, often called saucer magnolias or tulip trees. These stunning deciduous small trees put on a spectacular early spring show, bursting into bloom before their glossy green leaves even appear. Their tulip-shaped flowers start with a creamy white center that melts into a rich, purplish pink on the outside—a breathtaking contrast against the bare branches. There’s something magical about seeing those electric fuchsia blooms emerge while there’s still a crisp chill in the air, reminding us that warmer days are just around the corner!
Reaching a manageable size of 8-12 feet tall and wide, Ann and Jane are perfect for smaller landscapes or as a striking focal point in a garden bed. They thrive in full to partial sun and prefer well-draining, slightly acidic soil. Once established, they’re relatively low maintenance, needing only occasional pruning to maintain shape and remove dead wood. While they’re relatively drought-tolerant, regular watering during dry spells helps keep them looking their best.
Ann and Jane magnolias are a must-have for gardeners seeking an early-season showstopper that’s both elegant and easy to care for!
