LEAF IT TO US – HOUSEPLANT ADVICE

Q: My fiddle leaf fig’s leaves are developing small brown spots with yellow halos — what’s causing this and how do I fix it?

A: Brown spots with yellow halos on fiddle leaf fig leaves can come from a few common issues, but the usual suspects are overwatering (leading to root problems), inconsistent watering, or a leaf fungal/bacterial infection.

First check watering and roots. Overwatering and poor drainage often cause root stress; stressed roots can’t supply water evenly, producing brown patches and yellowing around them. Feel the soil if it’s constantly wet or the pot sits in a water-filled saucer, cut back watering and let the top 1–2 inches dry before you water again. If the plant smells musty or the lower roots are dark and mushy, you’ll need to repot: remove the plant, trim away any rotten roots with clean scissors, and place it in fresh, well-draining potting mix in a pot with drainage holes.

Look at light and humidity. Fiddle leaf figs like bright, indirect light; too little light weakens leaves and makes them more vulnerable. Sudden changes in light or drafts (hot/cold) can also produce spotting. Move the plant to a consistent, bright spot out of direct harsh sun and away from heaters/AC vents.

Treat possible leaf infection. If spots look water-soaked or spread quickly, it might be a fungal or bacterial leaf spot. Remove heavily affected leaves with clean shears and avoid wetting foliage when you water. Improve air circulation around the plant. For mild fungal issues, you can try a copper-based fungicide or a neem oil spray following label directions; for bacterial infections, removing infected tissue and improving conditions is most important (chemical control is limited).

Prevent and monitor. Water consistently, ensure good drainage, provide bright indirect light, and keep reasonable humidity (40–60%). Quarantine any new plants before introducing them near your fiddle leaf fig. If spots continue to spread rapidly despite improving care, or if many leaves are affected, bring us a photo or the plant in so we can diagnose and recommend treatment specific to the problem.
