Plant of the Week – Yellow Bird of Paradise

The Yellow Bird of Paradise (Caesalpinia gilliesii) is an eye-catching shrub or small tree that has exotic yellow flowers with red stamens and feathery foliage similar to that of a mimosa. It can reach 6-10 feet tall and 4-8 feet wide at maturity, and has a natural irregular and open growth habit that can be pruned to encourage tighter denser growth.

This fast growing, sun loving plant is popular for a number of reasons:   it’s easy-care, cold hardy in our area, heat and drought tolerant, and it attracts butterflies, birds, and hummingbirds.  Use it as a unique accent tree or plant in a row for an informal screen or border.

We’ve just received a shipment of Yellow Bird of Paradise and we’ve now got them in 1, 2, and 5 gallon sizes.
