Plant Of The Week – Shumard Red Oak

Shumard Red Oaks are among the most desirable large shade trees and the best red oak for DFW’s notoriously alkaline soils. They are highly recommended because they are such beautiful trees,  and also Texas natives. We especially like the large lustrous green summer foliage that will turn a radiant red-orange color in the fall.
These massive deciduous trees have wide-spreading canopies that become more rounded as they mature. Once established, they’ll reach 60-80′ tall x 50-60′ wide, and are very cold-hardy and drought tolerant.
Plant Shumard Red Oaks in full sun and they’ll eventually shade your home in the summer, and let the sunshine filter through for warmth in winter.
