Q: “How Do I Prune My Large Houseplants”

A: Pruning can seem intimidating, but for many houseplants it’s one of the best ways to keep them healthy, full, and beautiful. Plants like Monsteras, Philodendrons, Pothos, Ficus, and many vining plants respond very well to pruning. Always use clean, sharp pruners and make your cut just above a leaf node (the point where a leaf meets the stem). This encourages the plant to branch out and produce fresh new growth instead of becoming long and leggy. Removing yellow or damaged leaves is also a great way to keep your plant looking its best.

That said, not every houseplant appreciates a haircut! Plants like palms, many ferns, and single-stem plants can be permanently damaged or left looking awkward if their growing tip is removed. While you can always trim away dead or damaged foliage, heavy pruning isn’t recommended for these varieties because they don’t produce new branches the way many tropical plants do.

When choosing a large houseplant, it’s worth thinking about future maintenance just as much as its appearance. Some plants are happy to be shaped and kept at the perfect size, while others naturally want to grow tall and wide with very little room for adjustment.
