Q: I want to get more into houseplants but I travel a lot is there any friendly, low maintenance plants you’d recommend?
A: If you love surrounding yourself with greenery but find that your schedule keeps you away from home frequently, choosing low-maintenance houseplants can make all the difference. Certain varieties are especially well-suited for people who travel, thanks to their ability to tolerate inconsistent watering and a range of light conditions. For example, ZZ plants and snake plants are known for their resilience because they can handle low light and go weeks without water. Dracaena’s offer a bit more height and visual interest while still being relatively forgiving, and pothos are popular for their trailing vines and adaptability. Succulents and cacti are also excellent choices, as they store water in their leaves and require only occasional care.
That said, you’re not limited to just these hardy options. With the right tools and preparation, you can successfully care for a much wider variety of plants. Moisture-retaining products, such as water-absorbing soil additives, help keep the soil hydrated for longer periods, reducing the risk of your plants drying out while you’re away. Self-watering pots are another great solution, they use built-in reservoirs to provide a steady supply of moisture to the roots over time. You can also group plants together to create a more humid microenvironment or move them out of direct sunlight before leaving to slow down water loss.
For frequent travelers, a little planning goes a long way. Watering thoroughly before you leave, ensuring proper drainage, and placing plants in suitable lighting conditions can help maintain their health. With a combination of low-maintenance plant choices and smart care strategies, it’s entirely possible to enjoy a thriving indoor garden without stressing over your time away from home.
