Ask Burton!

Q: My live oak looks bad! It’s losing leaves all over my yard.

A: It is supposed to do that this time of year.

Also, it’s time to fertilize your live oak. This isn’t to help the plant recover from an illness or damage. It’s just to support healthy spring growth, which your live oaks are starting to put out already. Live oaks are persistently green during our normal winters, but they aren’t truly evergreen. The leaves do change out, and it’s perfectly fine.

Happily, the best thing to do in this case—is nothing! There is no cause for alarm.
