A: It’s not just you! The fall color of trees in our part of North Texas is better than usual, and far better than I would have expected this year after the summer we just went through. Newly planted trees this year might not have a great show after the heat, but most established trees are showing off!
Fall color of trees depends on three factors:
The genetics of the tree. Some trees have better reddened or showy yellow growth in the fall. Some don’t, particularly. Can’t change this one.
Adequate soil moisture and humidity. Dry years, trees drop with a lot less show. Fortunately, we had excellent rainfall in August, October and November, and our yearly rainfall totals caught up.
Gradual cooling, colder weather. We had, notably, weather that actually felt like the season (for once!) this November.
All told, it’s given us great color this year as trees make ready for winter. This one’s entirely dependent upon Mother Nature. Enjoy the win when she gives it to you.
