Think it’s too late to plant? Not in North Texas. August is actually a great time to refresh tired flowerbeds with vibrant, heat-loving plants that will keep blooming into fall.
Many summer annuals still thrive in this heat, including lantana, vinca, angelonia, zinnias, ornamental peppers, moss rose, sweet potato vine, and blue daze. These sun-loving plants recover quickly after watering and add vibrant color and texture to both garden beds and containers.
If you’re looking for something more permanent, perennials like salvia, lantana, rudbeckia, Mexican petunia, and Turk’s cap are excellent choices. They’re tough, colorful, and many are pollinator-friendly too.
To help new plantings thrive, water deeply and consistently, mulch well, and try to plant early in the morning or late in the day. With just a little care, you’ll enjoy a burst of fresh color that carries your landscape through summer and into the next season.
