Burton |
Burton
specializes in diagnosing and
solving plant problems. You
may be experiencing these same
issues, so we want to share
Burton’s advice.
When you come to Covington’s,
Burton can usually be found
at the Customer Service desk
and he’s always happy
to help make your gardening
experience easier and more
enjoyable.
Please bring actual bugs or
plants or photos showing the
problem when you come to get
your gardening problems identified.
Q. Have you heard anything
official about how lake levels
might affect watering restrictions?
A. I went to the North Texas
Municipal Water District's
open-meeting on January 26th
to hear what they had to say
about the state of our water
supply, actions they're taking
to address our immediate and
long-term water needs, and
the likely recommendations
for drought stage programs.
There was some good news, some
so-so news, and (thankfully)
no devastatingly bad news.
There was a LOT of interest
in this meeting - a meeting
room meant for perhaps forty
visitors had us standing room
only into the lobby and darn
near to the exits. A few major
highlights:
1. Stage Four water restrictions
are under no circumstances
happening before June the 1st,
absolute worst-case scenario.
The water board will meet regularly
to stay on top of the likely
water supply based upon the
rains, and adjust water restrictions
up or down as needed. The
atmosphere in the room and
all topics discussed made it
sound as if it's most likely
they'll leave the existing
restrictions in place in some
form for the foreseeable future.
This is MIXED
GOOD NEWS -
all of us can keep our yards
alive and even make landscape
beds and trees thrive under
modified Stage Two or Three
restrictions. It's going to
be a year in which new plantings
are going to depend heavily
upon your hand or drip system
watering, not your sprinkler
systems, but it's still easily
doable.
2. They are still finalizing
water purchasing contracts
with the City of Dallas for
raw water from Ray Hubbard,
Tawakoni, and the Trinity Main
Division areas, but those contracts
as of now don't appear to come
with legal snags that could
delay their implementation.
This doesn't fix all our long-term
or even short-term needs but
it sure helps. This is GOOD
NEWS.
3. NOAA's forecast has the
current La Nina breaking sometime
between March and May, and
if we return to our normal
rainfall patterns, Lake Lavon
should entirely refill this
spring according to the main
speaker. This is GOOD
NEWS.
Basically, we'll have water
to use but we all need to be
responsible with it this year,
so make sure you're not wasting
your water in the least. Click
here for some good water
conservation tips. (PDF)

our Newest Landscape Designer-Mike
Penrose |
Mike,
a life-long gardener, studied
art at California State University
Long Beach and is a licensed
Architect in California and
Texas with 30 years of experience.
This background allows him
to see both the technical/practical
side as well as the creative
aspects of a design.
Mike believes that a well
designed landscape is an extension
of your home and can enhance
not only your home’s
value, but your life as well.
He’ll
suggest plants that thrive
in your landscape and give
you maximum enjoyment, and
since landscape designs often
include structural elements,
he is perfectly suited to design
them and understands how they
fit together in harmony with
the plantings. |
| Smiling
in Rockwall |
In October
2011, the Smiley’s contacted
Covington's to completely revamp
their backyard. They’d
just purchased an existing
home in Rockwall to be closer
to their grandkids, and they
wanted their landscape to be
very family-oriented. Covington’s
had landscaped their previous
home in Rowlett... as a
matter of fact they told us, “It
was the landscaping that sold
their home so quickly during
a weak economy.” The
Smileys asked that their new
landscape include low-maintenance
plants, a fire pit, seating
area, water feature, arbor,
and patio extension. They
also requested that we do nothing
that would block their view
of the greenbelt behind their
home and that we remove all
seventy rose bushes that were
growing in their yard. The
previous homeowner was known
throughout the neighborhood
for having the most gorgeous
roses; however, the roses just
did not fit the Smiley's lifestyle.
Mike Penrose, Covington's Designer/Architect, was sent
to fulfill the Smiley’s landscape dreams. He
was able to achieve all of their objectives for a beautiful
new landscape and outdoor living area that the whole
family could enjoy. We even used hardy heat-tolerant
plants to attract butterflies and hummingbirds especially
for the kids. We also transplanted nine of the
old rose bushes to a neighbor’s landscape.
With spring fast approaching, it’s time to contact
Covington's to design your next landscape. If
you purchase a landscape installation with at least
$250 worth of plants by February 15, 2012, you’ll
receive 20% off of our normal planting labor cost and
15% off all regular price plants! Excludes
tree plantings.
